Legendary Hollywood producer Sam Goldwyn rejected the use of motion pictures as persuasion, saying, “If you want to send a message, call Western Union.” But, today few in Hollywood will dispute that communicating idea content to an audience using sights and sounds on screen can persuade people to change their perceptions, beliefs, and even their behaviors. Gene Roddenberry chose to use television in this way in the 1960s when he created Star Trek.

Those of us who were teenagers when the original Star Trek premiered on television ...

There is no global agreement about how to refer to this genre of science fiction motion picture and television entertainment. But, many choose to refer to it as science fiction space operas, adapting the term from the name of the much earlier soap operas genre.
Some prefer to use the name science fiction space adventures. Pictured are Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner at the 40th anniversary of one of the most famous examples of this genre. By whatever name you want to call it, ...

My original Trekology.com website helped to persuade Wesley Y. Joe, Ph.D. to collaborate with me on an extended piece that analyzes Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. The outcome is a chapter (excerpted here) that we wrote together entitled, “Inverted Perspectives on Politics and Morality in Battlestar Galactica” in the book, New Decades of Political Science Fiction, published in June 2008 by the University of South Carolina Press. You can preview the chapter online here.

One significant (if unusual) aspect of Roddenberry was that even though he was a television producer, much preferred books:1

This section of WoodyGoulart.com is here because of my love for science fiction. It all started with time travel. No, not that I claim to travel in time! My interest in science fiction stories about time travel began during my teenage years when I read a classic novel by Isaac Asimov. Then, many years later, I was very fortunate to meet and interview Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry when I worked in Hollywood.
I call this section of my website Trekology and here you will find explorations ...

When I was working in Los Angeles radio in the early 1970s, I produced a documentary series about the original Star Trek on the occasion of the debut of the Saturday morning animated spinoff on NBC-TV.
I first met Gene Roddenberry in 1973. Somehow, I persuaded him to agree to an interview for the radio documentary that I was producing. You can hear one segment (less than 3 minutes) from that multipart radio documentary featuring comments from Gene ...

I was a just entering my teenage years when I first started to read science fiction. Asimov’s Foundation trilogy captivated me completely during the early 1960s before there were any space adventures on television.

James Cameron’s Avatar is an important film for many reasons. The most newsworthy reason is that ticket sales for this film released on December 18, 2009 are already above the one billion dollar mark worldwide. But, some conservatives are angry about the success of a film that they consider to come from a liberal agenda.
I typically do not go to a film (or avoid going) because of what may or may not be the director’s ...

Ron Moore developed the 21st century edition of Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009). After examining Moore’s Battlestar Galactica, I came to several conclusions about how viewpoints about our real-world politics and humanity were skillfully conveyed.
Directly contributing to what he was able to accomplish with Battlestar Galactica, Moore began his television writing career on the third season of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the late 1980s. He worked his way up to script editor, then co-producer, and ultimately, producer. Moore has written or co-written a total of ...
