Summit Marketing/U.S. Army—Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia (2006-2008)

Senior managing editor—Provided essential strategic communications management and editorial management of domestic outreach program from military to civilians with both print and online communications vehicles. Upgraded website to Web 2.0 standards by increasing interactivity from previous static pages presentation. Also involved in strategic management of corporate marketing and public education.

AARP—Washington, DC (1995-2006)

2004-2006: Digital editorial manager at AARP—Created and managed first AARP national blog and served as ghostblogger for executives. Provided mission-critical communications management of two AARP national websites including information architecture management, content management, issues management, staff supervision, and updating of content. Functioned as deputy department director. Online reputation management responsibilities using social media (blogs, bulletin boards).

2000-2006: Communications management at AARP included staff supervision for six consecutive AARP national public expositions including daily convention newspaper in addition to the programmatic material for the board and executive staff.

1999-2004: Manager of editorial services at AARP—Supervised staff writers/editors who write AARP communication products, Intranet and external website on behalf of senior executives to support and advance the organization’s ambitious social marketing goals. Track record of innovation, notably in the development of AARP’s Web-based public message management for approximately 2,000 staff at national office and 53 field locations. Complete website management responsibilities for information architecture, website development and design, and content management systems. Functioned as deputy department director.

1997-1999: Manager of speechwriting at AARP—Worked closely with and advised CEO and other executives on their presentation skills and audience adaptation in addition to writing/editing major speeches for them. Directly supervised the AARP speechwriters, assigning and editing their work. Shared responsibility of department director function.

1995-1997: Speechwriter at AARP—Wrote major speeches for CEO, three AARP Presidents, and the AARP Board of Directors. Coordinated news conferences and counseled executives on their presentational skills, including TelePrompTer training, and how to respond to hostile media.

Mission Cable—Phoenix, Arizona (1993-1995)

Department director function as regional marketing and sales manager responsible for effective sales management at Mission Cable Company throughout the state of Arizona. Led community and government relations, and writing/editing news releases, executive speeches.  Served as media spokesperson in context of complex customer service issues regulated by municipalities. Supervised field sales and service repair staff.

Freelance Consultant —Phoenix, Arizona (1990-1993)

Freelance business development consulting—Established successful business plan and operational strategies for local food service business in Phoenix, Arizona. Served as radio advertising sales consultant, selling and writing advertising in Laughlin, Nevada and surrounding communities for local radio station network.

Continental Cablevision—Brockton, Massachusetts (1982-1990)

Company is now part of Comcast—General Manager for 6 interconnected systems with 33,000 subscribers in Plymouth and Norfolk counties in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Full budgetary responsibility for $13 million operation. Directly supervised five department heads: customer service; technical; sales and marketing; financial operations; local programming. Proven government relations experience in a highly regulated environment. Strong record of media relations in competitive market and writing/editing news releases, executive speeches. Served as media spokesperson in context of complex customer service issues regulated by municipalities.

Other managerial position at Continental Cablevision included educational services management during initial launch of “Cable in the Classroom” initiative serving 370,000 subscribers in Boston TV market. Government relations and community relations responsibilities. As cable programming manager, created and executive produced state-recognized daily local TV news program and local hospital health care series.
